Before, the museum was called as " Army Museum", located at 28A Dien Bien Phu Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi. On 22 December 1959, the museum was offical opened, marking the 15th anniversary of the Vietnam People's Army ( 1945 - 1959).

In 2020, a new Vietnam Military History Museum was constructed for the growing need for a more expansive and modern facility. The new ones opened to welcome tourists on 1 November 2024. The museum was awarded the Grand Prize at the 16th National Architecture Awards.

There are more than 150.000 artifacts and documents to display in the museum. The Vietnam Military History Museum, designed with a four-story main building, includes a basement and an outdoor exhibition area. Strolling around both sides of the building, you can see a Peace Monument, which rises from the wreckage of a B-52 bomber. There are a globe with mirrors about the journey from the Hung Kings to the 20th century.

You can see the Victory Tower with a height of 45m, marking Vietnam's victory in 1945. An ascending stack of 5-pointed stars is cut at a 60-degree angle. The tower's pentagonal base represents the 5 classes: intellectuals, peasants, workers, entrepreneurs, and soldiers.

The outdoor exhibition zones showcase a range of military equipment that was used during the wars, like artillery pieces, tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft. You can have the opportunity to see the 85mm artillery gun, the PT-67 tank number 555, and the MiG-17 fighter number 2047.
Several aircraft wrecks and shell casings are displayed in the area outside the museum.
