History of Saigon Opera House

Ho Chi Minh City Opera House was constructed in 1898 with French architecture design. This place spans a total area of 3,200m2. On 1st January 1900, Saigon Opera House was first inaugurated. 

The initial purpose of the Opera House was served for entertaining the growing middle class. The appearance of nightclubs, music bars, and a large number of passengers didn't come to the Opera house. There are some small performances to perform at the theater. 

The second war took place. Saigon Opera House was destroyed by the Allied, making the theater shut down.

In 1954, Vietnam and French signed the Geneva Accords after the French army surrendered to Viet Minh during the Dien Bien Phu, led by General Giap. Ho Chi Minh Opera House became a temporary shelter for French civilians. 

The Opera House used to be the Congress House of the Republic of Vietnam in 1955. In the 1975s, the theater came to its role as an art performance organization.
