Hoian Ancient Town, which is situated on the bank of the Thu Bon River, is a reflection of a harmonious mix of both indigenous and foreign cultures that have united to form this one-of-a-kind heritage site. Hoian was a significant commercial port from the 15th to the 19th century, and as a result, it allowed a large number of merchants from a variety of nations to establish themselves in the area.

Hoian Ancient Town

Even in modern times, Hoian has managed to keep its renown. A tranquil town that is home to holy temples, a charming location that features colourful lanterns and walls that are yellow in colour, and a historical neighbourhood that contains a great deal of historic architecture. The exceptional universal worth of the town is demonstrated by the original historic and cultural aspects that made up the town. Some attractions places to visit when traveling Hoian Ancient Town such as:

Japanese Covered Bridge

Your visit to Hoian Ancient Town will be lacking if you do not take the time to visit the Japanese Covered Bridge, which is widely considered one of Hoian’s most captivating sites. Near the intersection of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street and Tran Phu Street is where you will find the Covered Bridge, also called the Japanese Temple. The bridge is a wonderful illustration of the traditional architecture characteristic of the East. Although Japanese merchants constructed it in the middle of the 16th century, the Japanese Covered Bridge has undergone restoration and has become a harmonious architectural blend of the civilizations of Vietnam, Japan, and China.

Hoai River

There are a number of tourist sites that are connected to the Hoai River, which is a tributary of the Thu Bon river that flows through the city of Hoian. It is a common pastime for tourists to include a relaxing boat ride on the Hoai River on their list of things to do. We strongly suggest that you visit Hoian Ancient Town at night because, when the lights from the houses are turned on, the entire riverfront transforms into a magical paradise filled with dazzling fairy lights. Ancient Town Hoian exudes an atmosphere that is tranquil, soft, and romantic, and visitors may experience this feeling very strongly.

The releasing of lanterns on the Hoai River is an important tradition that serves two purposes: first, to express appreciation to ancestors, and second, to wish for a happy year moving forward. On the days of the full moon, which are the first and fifteenth of the month according to the lunar calendar, "Old Town Hoian trades its electric lights for traditional colourful lanterns." In the evening, the Hoai River is illuminated by the gentle light of the lanterns, and hundreds of paper flowers that are lit by candles are floating gracefully across the water.

Assembly Halls

Assembly Hall serves as a gathering area for members, where they can exchange, trade, and provide support to one another in their daily lives.

In accordance with the folk beliefs of the Chinese ethnic group, the assembly hall is also the location of the community’s annual sacrifices. In addition, the assembly hall is the place where numerous gods are worshipped.

In the past, the old town of Hoian served as a significant trading harbour, which attracted a large number of merchants from China. During this time period, the Chinese constructed assembly halls with the purpose of providing each member of the community with a shared spiritual space.

The city of Hoian is home to five different assembly halls, each of which is representative of a different Chinese community includes:

  • Fujian Assembly Hall (Phuc Kien)
  • Trung Hoa Assembly Hall (Duong Thuong)
  • Chaozhou Assembly Hall (Trieu Chau)
  • Hainan Assembly Hall (Hai Nam)
  • Cantonese Assembly Hall (Quang Dong)

Hoian’s Central Market

Hoian’s Central Market is a distinct highlight of the historic town, attracting a huge number of tourists thanks to its bustling and active environment. This contrasts with the quiet and tranquility that can be found in the old town. Various sections within the Market are dedicated to selling fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits, and souvenirs; however, the food court is likely to be the most enticing of all the sections. At this location, guests can sample a wide variety of Central Vietnamese cuisine specialties, including Cao lau, Quang noodles, and other dishes.

Make sure you don’t miss out on the gloomy and dismal Hell Cave, also known as Am Phu, which symbolises the world of damnation. The Huyen Khong Cave is the largest grotto in the area, and it is where the Buddha sculptures are illuminated in a mystical manner.

Han market

  • Address: 119 Tran Phu, Hai Chau 1, Hai Chau District, Danang
  • Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM every day

Han Market was established in the early 1940s, during the time that Da Nang was under French occupation. It was named after the Han river, which was located in the area. There, the French built a massive train network known as the Tourane Marché in order to bring products to the major station during their occupation. As a result of the continual expansion of the business, a number of Chinese and Vietnamese merchants made the decision to construct a commercial centre around the market that would include Chinese traditional medicine stores, jewellery stores, and grocery stores, among other types of establishments. During the year 1989, Han market underwent a comprehensive renovation that encompassed a total space of 28,000 square metres and included two spacious floors. Currently, the remodelling has resulted in the market having a spacious and revitalising environment. Additionally, the placement of retailers within the market has resulted in the consumers experiencing a sensation of relaxation because they are shopping there.

Linh Ung pagoda

  • Address: Bai But area, Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang
  • Opening hours: 6 am – 9 pm
  • Entrance fee: Free

On the Son Tra Peninsula sits the Linh Ung pagoda, a popular tourist destination in Da Nang. Perched on a turtle-shaped hill with a view of the ocean, it is surrounded by a vast primitive forest that is teeming with wildlife. This pagoda represents a major step forward for Vietnamese Buddhism in the modern era; its construction began in 2004 and was finished six years later. Heaven and Earth are connected at the pagoda. Nature enthusiasts must visit Buddha Beach, a stunning location on the Son Tra Peninsula near the pagoda. Local fishermen during the reign of Emperor Minh Mang supposedly found a statue of the Goddess of Mercy on the shore, prompting the construction of a temple in her honour.

Since then, the location has been known as But (Buddha) Beach, and its occupants have enjoyed tranquil and wealthy lives. The 18 sculptures of Arhat, depicting various emotions such as joy, fury, love, and hate, are truly remarkable works of art that visitors should not miss. Furthermore, the statue of the Goddess of Mercy will profoundly move them. At 67 metres tall and 35 metres in circumference at its base, it stands tall as Vietnam’s tallest monument. A 30-story structure would be dwarfed by it. There are seventeen stories within this monument, and on each level are twenty-one little Buddha statues depicting various emotions and forms. Rumour has it that the local fisherman are protected from storms and strong waves by the Goddess of Mercy statue, which faces the sea. Visitors to Da Nang can find spiritual solace at the Linh Ung Pagoda, which serves as both a religious and tourism attraction.
