Khai Dinh Tomb Overview

Khai Dinh Tomb is situated in Thuy Bang commune, Huong Thuy district, Hue city, approximately 10 km far away from city center. 

In the final 19th century, King Khai Dinh decided to choose Chau Chu mountain to build as the final resting place. So, the King conducted the construction of the royal house with the name Ung Lang on September 4, 1920. This tomb was quite costly but the most beautiful tomb in the Hue royal ones. 

The tomb of Ung Lang has a unique blend of traditional Vietnamese, Chinese, French and some architectural styles.

The time has a small area (117m by 48.5 m) compared to other Hue royal tombs however the time of building lasted for 11 years and took the most effort and money. At that time, this construction caused a conflict between people and the Yuan court. 

Tourists will be surprised with a grand staircase adorned with 127 stairs, and designed intricate dragon motifs.

To get to Tam Quan Gate, you must go across 37 stairs. Then, containing more 29 stairs to Nghi Mon and Bai Dinh Yard. The top is 2 yards with each floor is 13 step distance. The highest steps is Thien Dinh palace where is the resting area of Khai Dinh Empessor .

The interior was designed with many elaborate mosaics crafted from glass and porcelain.

The tomb of Khai Dinh is in the shape of a rectangular structure with a total of 127 three step staircases. The materials of the building are mainly  iron, steel, cement, and Ardoise. They moved back from France, Japan and China.

Tam Quan Gate

Tam Quan Gate has three gates such as one main gate and two auxiliary gates, impressing by the gate of stone pillars covered with majestic dragon statues with intricately carved details. 

The gate leaded the new world to come the home of Emperor Khai Dinh. Tourists can find the majesty and opulence of Vietnam's imperial heritage.

Nghi Mon and Bai Dinh Yard

You continue walk the next 29 steps from Tam Quan gate to Nghi Mon and Bai Dinh courtyard of Khai Dinh Tomb. Entering the gate, you will see the statues of courtiers and soldiers, stand tall in the yard. It is recreating a magnificent scene during King Khai Dinh’s reign. 

Each statue was  adorned with motifs to showcase the culture and customs of Vietnamese from 1916 to 1925.

Thien Dinh Palace

Thien Dinh Palace is situated on the top point of Khai Dinh tomb with a style of majestic architecture. This construction was ornate carvings with intricate details, impressive by vibrant colors adorn the palace.

The patterns on the ceilings nor the dragons on the columns were both shown in detail. Visitors will surprise the interior of Thien Dinh Palace with five sections like: Bodyguards rooms, the altar and portrait of Emperor Khai Dinh room, the front palace ( Khai Thanh), central space, the emperor's statue and grave. 

Best time to visit Khai Dinh tomb

The best time to visit Khai Dinh Tomb is from March to August. However, the average is quite high. It is hot and exhausting. So we recommend you should arrange your journey from January to march. The weather is cool, fresh air. You can explore more comfortably and conveniently. 

Don't come here from September. Hue's weather has typhoons and heavy rain. This makes the trip unhappy and affects your schedule. 

How to get to Khai Dinh Tomb?

Distance from Khai Dinh Tomb to Hue city center is about 10 km. It takes around 20 minutes to travel by different transportations. 

The route from Hue city, go ahead to Hanoi road, continue to Ngo Quyen street, then approach Dien Bien Phu and Minh Mang streets, you  will see the Khai Dinh mausoleum.
