  • Tran Hung Dao and Le Duan streets in the south
  • Tang Bat Ho and Dao Duy Anh streets to the north
  • Phan Dang Luu and Huynh Thuc Khang streets to the east
  • Le Duan street to the west

Imperial city was built by the Nguyen dynasty from 1805 to 1945. Currently, the citadel complex of Hue is one of the relics of Hue ancient Capital which is recognized as a World Cultural Heritage.

Kinh Thanh Hue is called the Hue capital citadel which was constructed in 1805 due to its King Gia Long. After that 1832, the Hue imperial city was completed under King Ming Mang. 

This place has nearly 140 small and large constructions with a square shape ( 6m high, 21 thick, 10 entrance and 10km in circumference).

Getting inside the imperial, you will witness the most important part of the citadel which is Hoang Thanh ( Royal citadel). It was built in 1804 and completed in 1833 with over 600m long for each side. The brick was 4m hight, 1m thick.

The citadel was protected by a trench system. To get to the Hue imperial city, tourists can go through 5 entrance gate like Southeast Gate, East Gate, Northeast Gate, North Gate, West Gate. 

In the past, Hoang Thanh had more 100 architectural divided into several sections such as:

  • Ngo Mon gate and Thai Hoa Palace 
  • Place shrines of the Kings under Nguyen Dynasty 
  • Internal affairs office
  • Kham Van Palace and Co Ha Garden

Next, we will get to Tu Cam Thanh which was reserved for the King and his family. In 1803, Forbidden Citadel was the first name of Cung Thanh, and renamed Tu Cam Thanh in 1821.

The brick walls are 3.72m high, 0.72m thick and 1230m in circumference. Tu Cam Thanh's front and back sides are 324m, the ones left and right sides are 290m.

  • Dai Cung Mon is called the Great Palace Gate which is in the front side. This was still a place for the working of Kings. 
  • Can Thanh is King's Private Palace
  • Khon Thai Residences were reserved for the queens. 
  • Duyet Thi Duong house is a Royal Theatre
  • Thuong Thien is the kitchen for King's food. 
  • Thai Binh Lau is the King's reading room.
