Bach Ma temple is one of the oldest in Hanoi with four guarding other temples including Quan Thanh temple, Kim Lien temple, Voi Phuc temple protecting Thang Long from evil spirits. 

This temple is located on Hang Buom street, in the east of Thang Long. Bach Ma temple was constructed in the 11th century under the Ly dynasty and as a place for the worship of Long Do who was an ancient god breaking the spells of the colonial mandarin Cao Bien.

Each year on the 12th and 13rd, February in the lunar new year, the Bach Ma festival is held to commemorate the contribution of Long Do' deity. 

Kings and mandarins would get to the temple to make offerings and pray for the nation's peace and prosperity. Until now the custom has still been preserved. So, each Tet holiday, there are a lot of pilgrims to worship and pray.

History of Bach Ma temple

The Long Do - an ancient deity to break the spell of Cao Bien who is Chinese mandarin effort to restrain the development economy of Vietnam. To memorize the meriz of this god, people built the temple of Long Do to worship him.

In the 11th century, Ly Thai To king decided to move the capital from Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh to Thang Long, Hanoi nowadays. The god of Long Do appeared in the King's dream telling about the white horse coming out from the temple, wandering and leaving tracks along the walls of the citadel. 

After this dream, Ly Thai To decided to build the citadel walls alongside of the marked tracks and successfully constructed the citadel. The name of the temple changed from Long Do temple to Bach Ma temple. 

Highlight architecture of Bach Ma temple

The architecture of Bach Ma temple is a unique architecture from exterior to interior of the temple. The temple has a big flag named  " Co Ngu Hanh" having 5 colors including red, yellow, green, white, blue symbolizing the 5 elements (fire, earth, wood, metal, and water) in oriental culture. 

Five colors are presented for 5 direction:
