Visting My Son Sanctuary, Quang Nam

If you want to stay in Hoian and Danang, you should visit My Son Sanctuary. This is an ancient Kingdom of Champa by UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1999. However, the temple was destroyed by natural disasters and war related. Currently, My Son Sanctuary has only about 20 of these temple towers still standing. 

Where is My Son Sanctuary?

My Son Sanctuary, Vietnam is located in Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam city and about 70 km away in Danang in the southwest, more than 40 km from Hoi An. 

It is a famous place to visit in ChamPa Kingdom in Southern Vietnam. With several ancient Cham temples, My Son Sanctuary spreads across a 2 km wide valley, covered by hills.

Time and war damaged the relics of My Son Sanctuary but the temple remains an important role in Vietnam's history and culture. 

My Son Sanctuary was the first temple which was built with wood in the 4th century to worship Saint Siva Bhadravarman. 

In the 6th century, the temple was destroyed by a fire. After, ChamPa people decided to build more towers and temples to worship Gods and continued to construct more structures in the 13th century.

Afterwards, Champa Kingdom must migrate south to Binh Thuan due to the influence of China, Cambodia. 

Since then, there have been no structures built on the My Son Sanctuary area. 

The architecture of My Son Sanctuary

The architecture style in Cham was heavily influenced by the Indian style. So, you can see a large tower which is built on quadrilateral foundations, each tower includes three parts like a sturdy tower, tower  body, the tower top with the man providing flowers, fruits or trees in the shape.

To learn more information about the Cham's culture, visitors should visit the Cham museum. There are many posters, pictures and documents showing the My Son Sanctuary.

Don't pass up to the traditional Cham dances in the afternoon each day. Many Cham's iconic dances like Shiva, Aspara will be performed by the local dancers. 

Tourists will admire the dance back hundreds of years from fan dances to water dances, creating the unique Champa culture.

Kate festival is called Mbang Kate, which is held in early October annually. The event is the bes important day to remember with their heroes and the late lamented families.

How to get to My Son Sanctuary? 

You can reach My Son from Hoian, Danang. There are many ways to get to My Son Sanctuary such as taxi/private car, motorbike, bus.

If you want to travel in an adventurous way, taking a motorbike is the suitable option. You can see and absorb many beautiful landscapes and local life in Vietnam.

It takes about 1 - 2 hours to get there. There are a lot of shops to rent cars in Danang, Hoian. The price is from 150.000 vnd to 200.000 vnd/day.

The second option is taking bus number 06 from Danang city to My Son Sanctuary.

The operate of bus runs from 5:30 am to 5:00pm daily and the fee only from 10.000 VND. The bus is not directly to My Son, you have to book a car to go ahead to this temple. 

Although a bus is cheap and lost more than other vehicles.  

The best way to travel to My Son Sanctuary is to rent a private car in Danang. You can combine the attractions in your trip.
