Cham museum is known for its Danang Museum of Cham Sculpture, located in Hai Chau district, near Han river.    With an area of more than 6.600 m2, this place is the biggest and largest Cham museum in Danang.

The museum divided into 2 parts to display the items, rare images and materials of Cham culture. This place was formally opened in 1919 to welcome the public.

Danang Cham museum was built in 1915 and the base completed in 1916. However, in 1919, the museum was welcomed by the public to visit. 

Due to the discovery of more antiques excavated, Cham museum expanded some spaces. The museum was expanded for the second time which was a room for exhibition, storage in 2002 and continuing, renovated one again in 2016 by local authorities. 

In 2011, Cham museum was recognized as one of the first class Cham museums in Vietnam, contributing to the important role of Cham culture.

History about Cham Dynasty

The Champa Kingdom was founded in 192 A.D and spanned through many destinies such as Lin-Yi, Huang Wang, Chang Chen. 

This kingdom stretched from Quang Binh province to Binh Thuan province with coastal plains, highland, and mountain ranges. The culture of Champa Kingdom was influenced by Hindu civilization. Several smaller states of Mandala with some ethnic groups, creating Champa Kingdom.

Travelling to the central Vietnam, you can see the remnants of the ancient cultural in Champa through the brick temples and towers, which was date from the 7th to 17th in some province such as Quang Nam, Danang, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Binh Thuan. 

Unique architecture of Cham museum

Cham museum was constructed in Cham architectural style in the end of the 19th century with simple and gentle lines. When you come here, you can admire the intensive and unique items of Champa Kingdom from the 7th to the 17th centuries. 

The architecture of the museum was designed by two French architects, Delaval and Auclair with several towers and temples of Champa.

There are about 300 sandstone and terracotta sculptures displayed in Cham museum, collected from Cham temples and towers along central Vietnam, from the province of Quang Binh to Binh Thuan. 

The temple and towers were decorated by the bas relief columns, flowers , lintels and figures on brick pillars. You can see the tympana, lintels and ornamental pieces that are carved with the gods, the holy animal in Hindu culture and flower leaves.

Champa sculpture stretched through 8 centuries from its golden age to its decline that you can see, reflecting a thick history book from the ups and downs of Champa art. 

Spanning the ruins of time and war, Cham sculptures brought the systematic works collection of ancient Champa artists.

Delaval and Auclair, who are French architects, designed the museum. Two architects combined the features of Cham temples with European Gothic style.

The main building is a highlight with its arches, creating the distinctive and unique building in the city. The construction has many windows to let natural light reach the exhibition rooms. Tourists can feel the vintage atmosphere, see the yellow walls, green moss and frangipani flowers.

Today, the museum stores more than 2000 antiques, however only one fourth of these are on display and the rest are in storage. The sculptures in Cham museum were made from sandstone, baked clay and bronze, from the 7th and 17th centuries.
